EMU Disputes Report in Email to Supporters

By Steve Wilson
Web produced by Seth Myers

March 3, 2004

As has been reported on Action News, $5 to 6 million was spent on the 10,200-square- foot home used to house the Eastern Michigan University President and for fund raising.

While the EMU president, Samuel Kirkpatrick, and all other university officials still refuse to answer questions on camera, they sent a Wednesday morning email to thousands of university faculty, staff, students and supporters in response to Action News broadcasts this week.

The email falsely suggests that it was not public money that was used. The message also claims that the house cost less than the figures show. ?All of this on a campus where classrooms and dorm spaces are in serious need of renovation.

"As is the nature with sensationalized journalism, the reports used dramatic style, language and innuendo in order to exploit the subject matter," it says.

"While highly emotional, the reports did not accurately present the facts about University House or Eastern Michigan University," it claims, without pointing to a single error in any of the Action News reports.

"You can help in combating WXYZ-TV’s sensationalized accounts of the university project," it suggests and then goes on to list facts that Action News already reported, but it spins them in the university’s favor.

The email tells EMU supporters if they hear this topic being discussed on news or talk shows, they should respond personally because, "Your opinion as someone who works or studies at EMU will carry more weight than what media see as the official ‘mouthpiece’ of the university."
